"Unraveling the Gut-Brain Connection: Understanding the Impact on Memory and Cognitive Function"

Do you wake up with brain fog and almost feel hung over when you haven’t had any alcohol to drink the night before ?

Or do you go through your day with brain fog and struggle to be on your “A game” in the workplace?

Do you find you can’t remember what you went to look for or you can’t find words to express yourself but they’re on the tip of your tongue?

Do you know this may all be linked to your gut?!

Have you ever become so excited or upset that it caused you to have to run to the bathroom? What about getting such bad news that it made you feel nauseous? The brain-gut connection is evident when we experience butterflies in our stomachs, typically when we're excited, in love or scared. Strong emotions can cause people to experience gastro intestinal (GI) symptoms.  GI issues have an impact on the brain — and vice versa.

If you've ever experienced these symptoms, you've felt the brain-gut connection firsthand.

A high percentage of people suffer from nutrient deficiencies from eating too much processed or fast food, sugar overload, a lack of sleep and high amounts of stress, all of which deplete energy levels. The brain relies on a steady stream of vitamins and minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids, and glucose from complex carbohydrates, in addition to getting enough rest and relaxation. Sugar, alcohol, refined carbohydrates and caffeine overdose have a direct impact on your brain function and gut health.

These can cause significant changes in the gut microbiota — which is problematic because your overall health depends heavily on the health of your gut. An allergy triggers inflammatory reactions, which affect everything from nutrient absorption to hormone-synthesizing to brain health.  So, you cannot separate gut health and its connection to brain health.  Nearly every cell, tissue and system in the body, especially the gut-brain connection, suffers from an unresolved sensitivity.  At Essential Health Wellness Centre we can test for food allergies and sensitivities on our 17D scanner.

If your colon isn’t happy and you are not digesting food properly, you may be experiencing some of these symptoms :

  • low energy or fatigue (including chronic fatigue syndrome)

  • irritability

  • trouble concentrating

  • headaches

  • forgetfulness and trouble remembering information

  • low motivation, feeling hopeless or mildly depressed

  • anxiety

  • confusion

  • trouble sleeping through the night or insomnia

  • difficulty exercising

  • ADD/ADHD

  • and many more

When the good bacteria in your gut become imbalanced, you'll likely experience physical symptoms like gas, bloating, irritated bowel, heartburn and even unintentional weight gain or loss. Bacteria give off their own toxins which interact in the body and can further increase brain fog.

There are many diseases that are linked with poor gut health. Many of them are brain and inflammation related. Why would this happen? Let's look at some bacteria and what they do in the body:

ALZHEIMERS DISEASE:

people with more advanced Alzheimer's, for example, showed that their guts contained higher ratios of bacteria called Bacteroidetes

DEMENTIA AND LEWY BODIES:

Researchers have identified gut bacteria that are associated with dementia with Lewy bodies. Changing the levels of three bacteria, Collinsella, Ruminococcus, and Bifidobacterium, may delay the onset and progression of this neurodegenerative disease.

ADD/ADHD:

Specifically, a gut microbe called candida albicans seems to increase the permeability of the intestinal lining. Children with ADHD had a larger presence of the microbe.

RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS:

Using a preclinical model (experimenting in the lab and not on patients), the researchers determined that the gut bacteria Eggerthella lenta causes an autoimmune response before the onset of the clinical symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.

LUPUS:

But one species, known as Ruminococcus gnavus, was five times more plentiful in patients with lupus. And the bacterium was particularly numerous in patients who were undergoing flares or who had kidney disease.

AUTOIMMUNE THYROID DISEASE:

Another theory suggests that a decreased population of beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium is related to the development of Auto Immune Thyroid Disease. Lactobacillus has been proven to protect TH17 cells and support their barrier integrity by secreting IL-22 and IL-17.

ULCERS AND PSORIASIS:

The bacteria that can cause flares are streptococci, staphylococci, which are known as epidermal pathogens. And then there's also helicobacter pylori, which is the gut bacteria which has been known to cause ulcers. It also can trigger psoriasis as well. Also, porphyromonas gingivalis and chlamydia.

ECZEMA:

Bifidobacterium can stimulate the production of Th1-type cytokines and leads to Th1-dominant immunity. 44 Therefore, the amount of Bifidobacterium in the intestine might be related to the onset of eczema in the host.

WEIGHT GAIN:

If Ruminococcaceae members are present, the bacteria produce metabolites from these absorbed nutrients and they are transported to the liver and other tissues of the host body, generating additional energy, which in turn causes weight gain.

WEIGHT LOSS:

People who had more bacteria that belonged to a group called Prevotella compared with those that belonged to the Bacteroides group lost weight and body fat more easily than people who had equal amounts of these bacteria.

ROSACEA:

Demodex folliculorum mites, Helicobacter pylori, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Chlamydia pneumoniae, and the Demodex-associated bacterium, Bacillus oleronius are microbes that have been linked with rosacea.

DEPRESSION:

It was consistently shown that Eggerthella levels were higher in those with depression and anxiety. It was shown that those with depression and generalized anxiety disorder had decreased levels of Subdoligranulum and Coprococcus

MOOD DISORDERS:

Conversely, various genera from the Clostridiales order were found to be reduced in the faecal microbiota of people with GAD [21] although Clostridiales was positively correlated with anxiety scores in a study analysing serum microbial DNA composition in patients with mood disorders

BAD BREATH:

One of the most often occurring reasons of digestive system bad breath is H. Pylori. It's a sort of bacteria that often coexists with the other bacteria in your gut microbiome, but when things go awry, it can cause major damage. About two thirds of stomach ulcers and duodenal ulcers may be brought on by it.

CHRONIC INFLAMMATION:

didolesgii in the gut may trigger the production of antibodies and T cells that circulate throughout the body and attack the joints, leading to chronic inflammation.

HAIR GROWTH:

Research has shown that individuals with alopecia areata had higher amounts of E. coli in their gut than those without the condition. This suggests a possible negative relationship between E. coli overgrowth and hair health.

NAILS:

Bacterial infections of the nails are caused by gram negative bacteria, usually Pseudomonas aeruginosa (recognizable because of green or black coloration of the nails) but also Klebsiella spp. and gram positive bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus.

AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES:

gallinarum initiated the production of auto-antibodies and inflammation — hallmarks of the autoimmune response. They confirmed the same mechanism of inflammation in cultured liver cells of healthy people, and the presence of this bacterium in livers of patients with autoimmune disease.

Luckily, brain fog and gut health is considered a repairable condition and by improving gut health it will play a major role in healing on numerous levels.  There are many amazing healing herbs that play a major role in gut health. Essential Health stocks a product that contains 12 healing ingredients that will quickly get to work to repair your gut which in turn will improve brain function.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Colon Repair Formula has the following extremely natural healing ingredients :-

  • Liquorice root - has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects.  Licorice root extract is often used to relieve symptoms of indigestion, such as acid reflux, upset stomach, and heartburn.

  • MSM - may help to rebuild the lining of the digestive tract and could reduce allergic reactions to certain foods. It is also useful for helping those with leaky gut syndrome as it can help to stop particles from leaching out of the gut through small openings where they can enter the bloodstream and cause an inflammatory response.

  • Aloe Vera powder - Is helpful for treating constipation.  Aloe Vera contains enzymes that can help with the breakdown of sugars and fats, and that can help your digestive system to keep running smoothly.  It can also assist with decreasing any irritation in the stomach and intestines.

  • Quercetin - has been shown to inhibit gastric acid secretion, oxidation of gastric cells, and Helicobacter pylori, which is very protecting for the gut.

  • Marshmallow root - may protect the mucous lining of the stomach, which may reduce the risk of certain ulcers.

  • Ginger root powder - can reduce fermentation in the gut, constipation and other causes of bloating.

  • L-Glutamine - helps to improve gut permeability as it seals and lines the digestive tract.

  • Magnesium citrate powder  - may relieve constipation.

  • Acidophilus powder -  acidophilus is one of the friendly bacteria which helps to improve gut health, lower cholesterol, heal gastrointestinal diseases, and may reduce yeast infections.

  • Snow mushroom, also knows as Tremella - can be soothing for the digestive tract and helps to play a role in digestion and promoting a balanced gut micro biome.  It is also anti-inflammatory.

  • Inulin is a fermentable prebiotic fiber beneficial for a healthy gut microbiome.
